Sofrito is the home of the Tropical Discotheque – rejoicing in the heaviest rhythms from Africa, the Caribbean and South America.  From the legendary Tropical Warehouse parties in East London to the clubs and bars of Brooklyn, from beach parties in Greece to festivals and clubs across Europe, the unique Sofrito sound has been surprising ears and exciting feet for 3 years and continues to grow…

The Sofrito Specials label champions the Tropical Discotheque sound – mixing up raw Afro flavours with Disco and Latin rhythms.  It isn’t about “world music” – it’s some of the best dance music ever made.
The first Sofrito release “Music is the Word/E8 Highlife” came out in 2007 and has become a bit of a classic amongst Afro DJs – it was also featured on the Lovemonk Compilation “Republica Afrobeat Volume 3″.  Follow up 12″  “African Soul Power” was picked by Gilles Peterson as one of his re-edits of 2008.

Sofrito is run by DJ’s Hugo Mendez and Frankie Francis alongside The Mighty Crime Minister and designer-extraordinaire Lewis Heriz. Over the past three years, Sofrito events have featured guests including Manu Dibango, the Poets of Rhythm, the Souljazz Orchestra, Quantic, Nickodemus and Nappy G (Turntables on the Hudson), Tropical Treats Soundsystem, Natural Self, Combinacion Atlantica, Nick the Record, Prince Fatty Soundsystem, Nostalgia 77 and many more….Sofrito has brought together musicians and artists from Ghana, Nigeria, Cuba, Venezuela and Colombia to celebrate the heaviest sounds from across the Tropical Spectrum.
