"A few words about my approach towards this jazzcast: As a jazz lover and DJ i have been collecting jazz vinyl/CDs for nearly 20 years now and this jazzcast for me is a journey through that collection, hopefully discovering something new along the way. Hopefully opening some doors to artists and genres you may not know. All the selections in these ’sessions’ are some of my personal favourites from each genre, and as time progresses we’ll go a little further in all directions. JDJ is not purist jazz for anoraks, its an exploration (maybe an introduction) into the soulful and cool underground world ‘true’ jazz inhabits. I am not an authority on jazz but I love it and know what shakes my rattle! For me, all music is born of jazz - that is from those African rhythm roots. Funk, Soul, Disco, Breakbeat, Leftfield, HipHop, House, NuJazz, Fusion… it’s all Jazz to me. This is also the reason behind the name, JazzDJ".

Jazzcast 049 Soul . the Vocal session
Soul… A very soulful seventies session hear.. featuring the human voice in many wonderful forms. About 1979 i discovered amongst my hippie brothers vinyl collection the Ann Peebles album ‘I Can’t Stand The Rain’ and my curiosity was well rewarded! Consistent and fully charged with cut after cut, her album has remained at the front of my Soul box always, alongside other excellent offerings such as Gloria Scott’s ‘What Am I Gonna Do’ and Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’ and artists like Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Terry Callier, Donny Hathaway and Syl Johnson. Soul is everywhere, its the valuable essence of all good and authentic music, from Folk to Jazz! And funny enough i was deeply into Soul music before discovering Jazz… this session was aptly recorded at 6am in the morning while the sun was coming up and warming us up nicely for the Valentines session coming along soon!!! Enjoy…

NuJazz session with a very Jazz flava… some of these tracks i have discovered are available on compilations, which says alot about the quality of these tracks, nujazz classics already!!! I do get goose bumps (chicken skin) listening to some of these tracks, they oouze with quality production and authenticity and that certain jazz hook that just gets me every time. Notably DJ Cam’s ‘Summer In Paris’ and Nicola Conte & Gianluca Petrella’s ‘New Standards’. It’s all good, enjoy and seek them out…

Jazzcast 036 Brazilian Connection
Brazilian connection session: episode two… another summer soundtrack of nice Brazilian sounds. Some classic grooves hear, funky and soulful fusion, some nujazzy flavas too. We also feature two new albums from the outstanding Far Out Recordings label. Legendary Brazilian composer Antonio Adolfo’s wonderful 70’s stylee ‘Destiny’, and the superbly gifted Arthur Verocai treats us with ‘Encore’, following up from his debut album way back in 1972!!! Both these new albums are a wonderful addition to any jazz headz Brazilian box…
Enjoy this session ;-)
Jazzcast 035 Exposé
I’m feeling melancholic… so this is the melancholic exposé session!!!
Those nice peeps over at Candid Records kindly sent in a bunch of albums to Explorations in jazz… and with their 2007 festival just around the corner i felt it was most appropriate to pick some of Candid’s quality talent for your ears right now!!! And although this is a melancholic session, these albums are anything but sad, and they can all be found at Candid Records store. What really stands out for me is the Geoff Gascoyne album ‘Keep It To Yourself’! Also notable are the beautiful Mishka Adams, Gustavo Marques & Pororocas and Stacey Kent ;-) So switch the lights down low, light some candles, pour yourself a large glass of fine wine and let this session take you on a journey to that melancholic shore we all visit occasionally in life, enjoy…
JazzPod 034 Cuban Caravan
Climb onto the Cuban Caravan… this session is a selection from the recent Bestival series i did for the Havana Club. If you can stand still during this jazzcast then there is something wrong with you!!! No need to dance the Salsa (and i can)… the nice thing which i love about jazz is you can move any funkin way you like to the music, no matter the genre!!! As long as you’re moving ;-) Hear we have Cuban and Salsa rythyms to start with, finishing off with some kick ass funkin latin jazz… enjoy ;-)
